Flat Earth In The Bible?

Flat Earth In The Bible?

The Flat Earth phenomena was once held as the general consensus by many and as established fact by ancient scientists as it was assumed to be a presumably self-evident truth. Christians would assert that the Earth is not flat but may appear so due to viewer’s direct eye-sight as a spherical earth has a surfaced plane which is obviously flat at a short distance. This is true, however; this could still not be a solid case as pillars  were stated to be the foundation and the corners had angels standing by edges were briefly described in the following verses.

“He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble.” (Job 9:6)
“He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.” (Psalm 104:5)

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.”        (Job 37:3)
“That it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?” (Job 38:13)

“And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed earth of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” (Isaiah 11:12)

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” (Revelation 7:1)

“These are the visions I saw while lying in bed: I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous. The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky;  it was visible to all ends of the earth.” (Daniel 4:10-11)

The shape of Earth is approximately oblate spheroidal (1) (2), Not flat as Christianity believes,(3) as they assumed the Earth had ends.(4)

According to radiometric dating and other sources of evidence, Earth formed about 4.54 billion years ago. (5)  Scientists have not found a way to determine the exact age of the Earth directly from Earth rocks because Earth's oldest rocks have been recycled and destroyed by the process of plate tectonics. If there are any of Earth's primordial rocks left in their original state, they have not yet been found. With a radius of 3,959 miles (6,371 kilometers), Earth is the biggest of the terrestrial planets, and the fifth largest planet overall. It takes about eight minutes for light from the sun to reach our planet. All celestial bodies orbit.(6)

Earth's atmosphere and oceans were formed by volcanic activity and outgassing that included water vapor. The origin of the world's oceans was condensation augmented by water and ice delivered by asteroids, proto-planets, and comets. Like Mars and Venus, Earth has volcanoes, mountains and valleys. Earth's lithosphere, which includes the crust (both continental and oceanic) and the upper mantle, is divided into huge plates that are constantly moving. Earth's global ocean, which covers nearly 70 percent of the planet's surface, has an average depth of about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) and contains 97 percent of Earth's water.(7)

Almost all of Earth's volcanoes are hidden under these oceans. Earth has a very hospitable temperature and mix of chemicals that have made life possible here. Most notably, Earth is unique in that most of our planet is covered in water, since the temperature allows liquid water to exist for extended periods of time. Earth's vast oceans provided a convenient place for life to begin about 3.8 billion years ago. (8)  Many other surface features are the result of the movement of these tectonic plates. The plates move anywhere from 25 to 100 mm per year. About 250 million years ago most of the land was connected together. (9)

For many years, desperate devious Christian missionaries such as one that goes by the name of William Campbell have even gone as far as to present (Isiah 40:22) as an indication that the earth is round.

"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.  He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like grasshoppers.” (Isaiah 40:22)

The Geographical Meaning of Earth Seas in Genesis 1:10
by Paul Seely:

"There is one verse in the OT, however, which has often been cited at least by laymen as a proof that the earth was understood to be a globe.  I refer to Isaiah 40:22 which speaks of God as the One sitting above the circle of the earth.   This verse does imply that the earth is circular, but there is nothing either in the underlying Hebrew word (hug) or in the context which necessarily implies anything more than the circularity of the flat earth-disc which the historical context and Genesis 1 have given us as the meaning of.  If Isaiah had intended to speak of the earth as a globe, he would probably have used the word he used in 22:18 (dur), meaning 'ball.'  (10)

In Conclusion:
Despite the desperate attempts to reconcile Isaiah 40:22 with the discoveries of modern-day science regarding the physical shape of the earth, they have only been proven young yet again by their sacred text.
