Day 7 & God Sleeping?

Day 7 & God Sleeping?

God by definition, would not require or need a break, this only exposes vulnerability.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. (Genesis 2:1-6)

"For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy." (Exodus 20:11)

According to Clarke’s commentary on The Bible:

"One the Seventh day God ended, etc. It is the general voice of Scripture that God finished the whole of the creation in six days, and rested the seventh! Giving us an example that we might labor six days, and rest the seventh day form all manual exercises."

God in The Bible is apparently the one who falls asleep:

Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a man wakes-" (Psalms 78:65)

Barnes Notes On The Bible:

"Then the Lord awaked as one out of his sleep – literally, as one sleeping; that is, as one who is asleep suddenly makes himself. The Lord seemed to have slept, or to have been inattentive to what was occurring. Suddenly he made himself inflict vengeance on the enemies of his people."

An individual could ask, "is this an appropriate analogy befitting of God’s deity?" If God is the all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful. How was he was inattentive and suddenly decided to avenge his people?

In that case it was God. One must ask, why did The Biblical God have to rest after he was finished with all his work? Was the creation of this world too much for him to handle? Unless the man that was writing the verse must have felt tired that moment.  If the idea to be conveyed was that God finished his work and stopped after it, the verse would have said so. Instead, the word “rest” was used. How can one of a level-minded intellect grasp the concept that God, the all-seeing and all-powerful took a break?

Furthermore, we read:

“And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.” (Judges 1:19)

Clarke’s Commentary on The Bible:

Strange! Were the iron chariots too strong for Omnipotence? The whole of this verse is improperly rendered. The first clause, The Lord was with Judah should terminate the 18th verse, and this gives the reason for the success of this tribe: The Lord was with Judah, and therefore he slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, part of the verse either refers to a different time, or to the rebellion of Judah against the Lord, which caused him to withdraw his support. Therefore the Lord was with Judah, and these were the effects of his protection; but afterwards, when the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim, God was no longer with them, and their enemies were left to be pricks in their eyes, and thorns in their side, as God himself had said.

The commentator, as rational being would be. Was astonished by the demeaning nature behind the verse. So him (and several other Christians as well) desperately try to find a solution to God's conundrum. What he came up with is a suggestion to how this verse should have been written. A minor adjustment would not harm anyone… after all it’s not uncommon to find scribes editing the bible. Is this true scripture? Or the hands of man trying to cover up a fault of the anonymous Biblical man author.

If Jesus were truly God then how could God rest on the seventh day?

If he were truly the all-knowing God as stated in these verses.

"The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven." (Hebrews 1:3)

"and I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters," says the All-Powerful Lord. " (NET Bible,  2 Corinthians 6:18 )

"He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God." (Joshua 4:24)

"Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength." (NLT, Psalm 89:13 )

However, he also be strengthened by the Angels who are a product of his own creation?

"– An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him." (Luke 22:43)

However, this is not only limited to the Angels. But also the Devil himself as tempted God who had created him.

" – Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil." (Matthew 4:1)

How could people explain their deity growing in knowledge like a normal human being?

"And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." (Luke 2:52 )

The Biblical Scriptures present a God that is inadequate and shares several flaws his own human creation. One can ask, how can Christians accept to believe in such a portrayal of God? Doesn’t that make them ask the question how can the Bible be God’s word if it depicts God the way it does.

In addition, he was made weaker than the angels? Again, a product of his own very creation?

Hebrews 2:9 – What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position “a little lower than the angels”;

The Biblical God also regrets and grieves his own decisions.

"-And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel." (1 Samuel 15:35)

We must not forget the following verse:

"God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Number 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" (Number 23:19)

In conclusion:

If an individual truly analyses the formation of the Universe according to The Bible they would give it a peculiar look. How could it be that not plants or shrubs appeared on the Earth when they were created on the third day? If that is answered. Then how could they have possibly grown without any sunlight as previously discussed in Day 3? How is it that God, the creator of the universe could sustain the earth and his creation while sleeping ?
