Ants Have No Commander?


Although ants are frustrating when they get into your home or when you’re having a picnic, ants do help the environment. They are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. Depending on the species, ant colonies can consist of millions of ants. There are three kinds of ants in a colony: The queen, the female workers, and males. The queen and the males have wings, while the workers don’t have wings.  In The Bible, it asserts that ants have no commander, no overseer or ruler. Despite ants having ant farms where they form a myriad of colonies.

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander no overseer or ruler  yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” (Proverbs 6:6:8)
According to the Oxford Dictionary, Command is: Have authority over; be in charge of (a unit)

Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies that may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. Larger colonies consist mostly of sterile, wingless females forming castes of "workers", "soldiers", or other specialised groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens". In a few days, Queen ants can lay up to millions of eggs during their lifetime of thirty years.(1)  

Despite there being a hierarchy, Christians assert the queen is not in command. Which is the half-truth they normally tend to give. Yes, ironically the Queen ants are not in command.

 However, the true decision makers are the care-takers of the Queen and the soon to be queens. 

Because of this, the colony can just have one queen or multiple. (2) In addition, some queens use chemical means to keep workers in line. Queen bees, for example, can release a pheromone that appears to block workers' ability to associate specific smells with negative stimuli. This "brainwashing" pheromone, say the researchers who first detected it, may keep workers from realizing that hanging around their queen is unpleasant. The chemical might be the queen's insurance policy against any possible mutiny by younger workers.  (3)

The job of the soldier ant is fending off various predators, such as spiders or flies that will disrupt the nest. If not a soldier, the worker ant can take on various jobs such as scavenging for supplies, building the nest, taking care of the young, or they can be assigned to feed the queen and dispose of her waste. A new worker spends the first few days of its adult life caring for the queen and young. She then graduates to digging and other nest work, and later to defending the nest and foraging. These changes are sometimes fairly sudden, and define what are called temporal castes. An explanation for the sequence is suggested by the high casualties involved in foraging, making it an acceptable risk only for ants who are older and are likely to die soon of natural causes. (4)

In conclusion:

 Ant colonies also have soldier ants that protect the queen, defend the colony, gather food, and attack enemy colonies in search for food and nesting space. If they defeat another ant colony, they take away eggs of the defeated ant colony. When the eggs hatch, the new ants become the "worker" ants for the colony. Some jobs of the colony include taking care of the eggs and babies, gathering food for the colony and building the anthills or mounds.

Although being a self-evident and observable truth that ants form nests and colonies. The Bible claims that they do not have any sort of chain command. It is up to the reader to decide what they want to believe is actually correct.

    "However, the true decision maker(s)".

    You made an error in your statement. Decision maker(s) implies colony organization at the top yet no single commander. In this regard the bible verse is completely true. There is no contradiction.
